Your organisation is an Orchestra. But are you a Conductor?

An orchestra sounds good when everyone plays the same tune in harmony. Obviously! Musicians play the instrument they are best at and the conductor’s job is to make sure they operate as a team to deliver timing and harmony.

I have a friend in an orchestra and he was telling me about a theory of how different people are drawn towards certain instruments because the frequencies and tones of the instrument resonate with their natural vibe.

My friend is a percussionist, so is very rhythmic. He probably thumped cutlery on the table as a kid. I did ask him and he admitted it. Some people resonate with the haunting emotional tones of a violin or a clarinet.  Others tune in to the rich earthy tones of brass instruments like trombones.

My son is a guitarist, in a band not an orchestra. He loves rhythm guitar riffs, and is a pretty good drummer. He’s a combination melodic rhythmic type.

So what does this have to do with running a business or enterprise?

Each of us has a natural frequency or vibe. It comes from our brains because our brain is an electrical circuit and the laws of physics mean it sends out electromagnetic waves, just like a transmission tower does to your phone.

The wave frequency coming out of your head is your unique fingerprint. Your frequency may be similar to the frequencies of someone whose brain works like yours. You resonate with these people (“We just clicked right away!”).

And you may be in harmony with people’s brains that are a bit different.  That’s because we are not just one frequency but a mix of many and some of the mixes get on well together.  With these people you always find common ground. Often they show you new ways of looking at things. You find these people interesting even if sometimes you don’t always agree.

But sometimes a person’s brain works so differently to yours that your frequencies clash or cancel each other out.  That’s when you just “don’t get on” with someone even though you aren’t sure why.

How your frequencies are made up depends on which part of your brain you use when doing things. We often hear the saying “oh she’s a left brain type” which means a logical thinker. Or “he’s a right brain” so is therefore creative.

That’s true. Plus there’s the front of the brain and the back of it and we use all the parts. Everyone accesses different parts of their brain when they do things, and that is what makes up our unique blend of frequencies.  There is no right or wrong mix, just as there is no right or wrong fingerprints.  It’s you.

Some people are strong across a number of frequencies. Generally that means they are good at several things, sometimes even when those things seem incompatible. Multi-talented could describe them.

Others might be very much stronger in just one frequency.  Richard Branson for example is an off the chart creative frequency. He can really dream up good stuff. But he needs people with the frequencies he doesn’t resonate in to help him get the job done. He knows this and that’s why he succeeds.

How do you figure out someone’s frequency?

We could hire a Doctor and connect you to wires and electrodes. Not pleasant or convenient. Or we can use special analytical questionnaires which luckily exist today. They do the job very accurately and this is what we use in our business. These are quite different from the familiar personality profiles.

Once you know someone’s frequencies you know what they are good at.  You also know how to line up the frequencies of different people to cover the whole spectrum so that all the right skills are present in every project. This is vital because as I mention in an earlier Blog (Who beats what, or not?) every project is a series of processes and each needs a specific skill for it to happen.

Think of a project as like an orchestra that needs exactly the right mix of musicians so all the harmonies are present and the timing delivers the outcome you are aiming for.

As well as a better result, you create team harmony. Everyone gets on because each understands why the other is like they are. It’s more positive to consider someone on their strengths than their weaknesses or annoying habits.

Empathy and understanding are powerful ways to improve productivity. Knowing everyone’s natural frequency does that. Teams that Blue-tack everyone’s frequency profile on the wall have infinitely better planning sessions and create better results.

And that’s how you become a conductor.  It means you are in control and you know the formula to always be in control. Just as every great conductor does.

Uncovering and understanding the natural harmonics of your people and your business is one of the biggest breakthroughs you can ever make. To some people it sounds a bit mystical, but these are nature’s laws at work. Better to work with them because you can make them work for you.
